Monday night’s Born and Raised Store Opening was just fantastic - what a way to celebrate an album release. Thanks to everyone who waited in line and endured the rain. We hope the Store experience was worth it.

I was locked in behind the counter most of the night, but managed to grab a few photos.

Tom Sachs: SPACE PROGRAM: MARS

Went and gave the Tom Sachs exhibit a look today (I fell in love with his style after a friend sent me 10 Bullets / Working To Code [Always Be Knolling!]… And Space Camp memories? And and the Nike Craft capsule? And and AND labeling plus labeling things after rappers? Pssh. Child, please).

The exhibit is beautiful in the ugliest of ways. So many details, so thought provoking. I gotta go back for the Indoctrination Training to take full advantage of the playground.

Born and Raised x Moleskine Notebooks

This project with Moleskine has been in the works for almost a year. We met over several months to conceptualize the project, finally settling on two very different styles. The one and only David Smith, who illustrated the Born and Raised album cover (and much more), created the artwork specifically for these books.

Each notebook has David’s art debossed on the cover. Inside is a silkscreened inscription from “Face to Call Home” and hand-numbering from an edition of 500. The Pocket Journal in the Writing Set has the “B&R” monogram debossed on the cover.

I’m in love with the brand new Writing Set: the exterior is a box that matches the look of a Moleskine notebook, but opens up to reveal a Pocket Notebook and Moleskine pen.

And - the A4 is my notebook of choice - I roll around with 2 of them at all times (business and pleasure). It’s a big’un (12” x 8.5”) - great for notes, sketching, cutting and pasting, whatever you like.

The photos above are only graphic representations of the real thing - can’t wait to get my hands on a few and show you more details.

A 12”x12” lithograph of the “Born and Raised” album art. Printed and double-mounted on Speckletone French Papers (backside of card is black, contrasting nicely with the cream front cover). Name and album title are embossed, so the lettering is raised and adds incredible dimension to the print. In the lower right corner is a blind embossed tag where each piece is hand-numbered (limited to 2000 total pieces).

I love this week of Young Storytellers - our final session, the Wrap Party. We celebrate the success of the Big Show, talk about writing in the future, what we all learned, and then say our goodbyes.

The previous post is one of many inspiring things our writers said today that shows the power of this program. A few others from our Storytelling Circle today:

*”You can just be yourself and no one would tease you for it. And when you write, you can be yourself. Which you have to be yourself for your story to be real.”

*”I didn’t know what a parenthetical was. I thought it had something to do with parents.”

*”I didn’t know how to write before Young Storytellers.” [me: “How is it going to influence you in the future? Do you want to write more?”] ”My brother and I are going to write a story for my mom for Mother’s Day.”

*”Before this, it was difficult for me to write. Now, I feel motivated to write.”

*”I wanted to be an author or a screenwriter, and now I want to do that even more.”

Next, we did the Cube Exercise (I discovered it on our Freshman Council Retreat at Tech. Google it but don’t cheat.) - really fun and thought-provoking for everyone. Then, we handed out some swag and went outside to play New York, which has surely displaced Red Rover as the most awesome come-on-over-if-you-dare game on playgrounds nationwide.

Another great session wrapped. Thanks again to all my mentors, the school for its incredible support of the program, and all the folks in the YSF office who keep me on my toes.

Young Storytellers Big Show!

Another semester, another incredible Young Storytellers Big Show. I couldn’t be more proud of our writers - again, true brilliance in each of the 10 scripts performed on Wednesday night. Some excerpts:

*The Holy Flash Drive by Robbie: “R0b and Jay (talking laptop computers) are face to desktop with the sea monster…”

*The Ruby Temple by Leola: Some dialogue -

LARRY (a boy made out of Swiss Cheese): It has a special ruby in it that will help me build my machine to build a dog.

JAMIE (his sister): What’s a dog?

LARRY: An ancient creature that’s extinct. They say that a dog is a cheeseman’s best friend.

*Gummi Bear Undercover by David: Tough to pick just one thing from David’s story, but he did something I’ve never seen before - very meta:

MR. D: I’m not the guy you’re looking for. Just ask the narrator.

NARRATOR: It’s true!

ADAM: Darn! The narrator’s always right.

*Saving James by Eleanor

CAPTAIN (of a cruise ship with an exotic bird convention on board): She’s got a boat load of luggage. No pun intended.

*The Battle for the Girl by Crystal: “I wrote my story when I was really hungry.” Her characters: Evil French Fry, Greasy McMustard, and Hamburger. And a DJ, of course.

*Lune Toon and the Forest of Doom by Fiona: In which Lune Tune goes looking for Moon Tune and finds a robotic spotted llama that can shoot lasers from its eyes.

*The Surf Competition by Vanessa: Our quietest writer got the biggest laughs at the show. A funny, heartwarming story about a sibling surfing rivalry.

*The Lost Kingdom by Mimi. Her lesson: “Don’t mess with a princess!”

*Sparkles and Inky Save the Day by Anna. After a rainbow cannon blasts a hole in the villain’s house: all the colors and sounds of the rainbow cause everyone to speak gibberish and change to their opposite colors for a half hour.

INKY (a squid girl): Fgfgfggffg trtr uiujim mkmkjh

*Ralph and His Wild Journey by Ea’sus: In which a 13-year old troublemaker is reunited with his dad (a singer on Broadway in New York City), thanks to some surprising help from the police. In the last scene:

RALPH (shouts at the court): Come on, Carmelo! Stop be ing a ball hog!

MR. JOHNSON (happily) I love you son!

“Most of my waking hours since about 11am on Monday have been spent trying to figure out what happened during the first half of the marathon.

“…guy next to me says, “Hang in there buddy. Got some shade coming up.” I remember all I could say was, “it’s so hot.”

“…This race, more than any other, means the world to me. And I pride myself on never quitting, never letting up, always embracing the challenge of every run. So for both of those things to come crashing down at the same time… just tough.

“…When I made it back to the hotel, she was there to give a big hug - I could see through a few tears that she was hiding a sign in the corner of the lobby she’d made for the race. I went upstairs to clean up - when I made it back down, the crumpled sign was gone and in its place, she handed me a newly-bought card with the sweetest, most wonderful note inside. So even though I was disappointed, ashamed, and full of regret, I’d also never felt more full of love. And in that sense, the 2012 Boston Marathon was far better than anything I could have imagined.”

A couple (as in more than one!) charts I made ended up in the I Love Charts book (one on the back cover!).
